Blog #56: Shenanigans Matter

Remember the last time you laughed so hard you almost spilled your tea? When was the last time you engaged in some shenanigans? If it’s been too long, it’s time to shake things up. Let’s dive into the art and science of frolicking at any age!

Shenanigans matter! They’re a testament to redefining aging for women, proving that laughter and connection can transform the way we see ourselves and each other. When you’re joyful, your body lights up with all kinds of good hormones, including dopamine and oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins—the quartet responsible for happiness, connection, and that unbeatable feel-good glow.

When you’re laughing loud and hard, you’re likely to use over 10 muscle groups. These include muscles in the face, upper body, lungs, abdomen, back, and pelvic floor (hence, spilling the tea). It’s a workout of the best kind—no gym membership required!

If you’re up to some shenanigans, you’re likely with someone who’s sharing the moment. This empowerment through play builds connection and memory. Years later, sometimes all it takes is a knowing glance from an old friend and you’re both transported back to a moment of hilarity – and snort laughing all over again!

Positive, playful joy isn’t about pranking. Even mischief needs boundaries.

Obviously, this kind of laughing boosts mental health, but did you know it also can stimulate creativity and improve longevity? These moments of joyful abandon boost creativity by breaking our routines. Engaging in playful or unexpected activities shakes up habitual thinking patterns, encouraging fresh perspectives. Also, laughter and play lower cortisol levels, freeing up mental bandwidth for creative thought. A relaxed brain is a more imaginative one! Playful scenarios often require quick thinking and adaptability, skills directly tied to creativity. And finally, frolicking opens you up to new experiences, sparking ideas you wouldn’t encounter in your usual routines.

As for longevity, shenanigans and laughing improve cardiovascular health by increasing blood flow. Playful movement (dancing, hopping, or just being goofy) enhances fitness without feeling like a chore. Laughter and joy increase the production of immune-boosting cells and infection-fighting antibodies. And as we said before, playful activities often involve others, and strong social ties are a proven factor in living better.

Out of practice in the mischief department? Here is a Shenanigans How-To Guide that might spark something.

Do Something Ridiculous: Take a salsa class, wear a quirky hat to brunch, or organize a flash mob!

Revisit Childhood Joys: Finger paint, blow bubbles, or host a game of hopscotch.

Improvise in Public: Share examples of harmless pranks, like leaving funny notes on grocery shelves. Be funny, be kind.

Plan a Mischief Mission: Examples could include a themed road trip, a surprise party, or a karaoke night.
