Inanna

Directing passion requires strength

Inanna

Inanna was a Sumerian goddess associated with both love and war. As goddess of love, Inanna was the goddess of passion and strength that comes with the bonds of love. As goddess of war, she invoked the chaos and tumult of the battle. Inanna’s devotees were noted for their habit of cross-dressing, blending, blurring, or eliminating the distinction between male and female in pursuit of transcendence through Inanna. This Divine Diva holds hook-shaped twisted knot of reeds, representing the doorpost of the storehouse, a common symbol of fertility and plenty in her right hand. On her left she raises the battle flag. Her medallion is a crown of roses, denoting the blood of love and war. Inanna’s message is that passionate love boils the blood, but it is up to us to direct that heat.
