Chicomecóatl

We are all in relationship with soil and stars

Chicomecóatl

Chicomecóatl is the Aztec goddess of agriculture and is most associated with the sustenance and nourishment maize provides. She was responsible for the success of the harvests, and her favor was sought through rituals, including sacrifices, particularly during the festival of Huey Tozoztli, which marks the beginning of the harvest season. In her crone form, she wields a sun shield, as does this Diva, signifying the cycles of seasons and life. This Diva’s medallion has a Virgin of Guadalupe whose appearance in 1531 as an indigenous woman forever linked traditional cultures with Catholicism. Like the Virgin, Chicomecóatl’s features connect her with the earth and the cosmos. This Diva’s message is that we are all in relationship with soil and stars
