#71. Aging Just Dropped a Wisdom Bomb

You’ve heard the warnings wrapped up in cute titles. The Age Bomb. The Silver Tsunami. The Great Graying.

These doomsday headlines treat aging women like some kind of demographic disaster just waiting to drain pensions, flood hospitals, and slow down the internet with our lengthy Facebook posts. But what if—stay with me here—what if the “age bomb” didn’t explode into crisis… What if it detonated into glittering wisdom, connection, and joy?

The Self-Determination Theory says that the secret to deep, lasting motivation is not external pressure or a pep talk from a life coach. Nope. It’s three deceptively simple things:

  • Autonomy – the freedom to choose your path

  • Competence – the ability to do it well

  • Relatedness – the connection that makes it matter

Now ask yourself: Who on earth has had decades of practice building exactly these three pillars?

Answer: Older women. In short? Us.

You’ve spent years making hard choices. Carving out space in careers, relationships, families, faith, and community. That’s not just survival—that’s autonomy forged in fire. You’ve learned skills, failed forward, reinvented, recalibrated, started over. You’ve raised people, built programs, stitched dreams out of thin air. That’s competence, my friend. And through it all, you’ve kept people close. You’ve been a lighthouse in someone’s storm. You’ve created meaning through friendships, caregiving, storytelling, and solidarity. That’s relatedness, and it runs deep.

Self-Determination Theory may have identified these truths. Meanwhile, we’ve been living them. In this third chapter, we’re not losing our value. We’re becoming living proof of what a well-lived, motivated life looks like. Forget being a burden. We are the blueprint.

So here’s the question that keeps buzzing in my brain like a bee at a picnic: What happens when we stop internalizing the ageist nonsense and start living like we already have what it takes? Because we do. We don’t need to seek validation. We need to own what we already carry—and amplify it.

  • Autonomy: What choices light you up right now? Where are you craving freedom?

  • Competence: What do you know so deeply, it’s time to teach or share it?

  • Relatedness: Where can you deepen connection, or let yourself be truly seen?

These aren’t just nice-to-haves. These are your birthrights, sharpened by every messy, gorgeous year you’ve lived. Self-Determination Theory just gave us the research to back it up. So go ahead. Be motivated. Be joyful. Be unapologetically wise.

Let the age bomb explode, drenching you in dazzling sparks of wonder and rebellion.
